Beach Strolls – Instow has a long sandy beach that is perfect for a leisurely stroll. Enjoy views of Taw and Torridge estuary, the historic Appledore, and the stunning coastal scenery.
Instow Regatta – A traditional regatta is held in August each year, featuring sailing, rowing, and other activities. There are also plenty of food and drink stalls, along with live music and entertainment.

Learn more about Instow

Instow is a small village located on the north bank of the estuary of the River Torridge in North Devon, England. It is a popular tourist spot, with its sandy beach, two pubs, and two restaurants. It is also the site of a Royal Naval Armament Depot and a Royal Marines training base.

Instow was first recorded in the Doomsday Book of 1086, when it was known as ‘Inestou'. The name is believed to come from the Old English words ‘inn' meaning a settlement and ‘stow' meaning a place or a sanctuary. The name has changed over the years, with the ‘n' being dropped in the 17th century.

The village was once a small fishing port, although it is now mainly a holiday destination. The beach is a popular spot for families, with golden sand and rock pools, and a number of water sports and activities available. The estuary is also a haven for wildlife, with a variety of birds and seals in the area.

The village has two pubs, the Royal Oak and the Ship Inn, both of which offer traditional pub food and a wide selection of beers and ales. There are also two restaurants, the Lighthouse and the Quay Cafe, both of which have stunning views over the estuary.

The estuary has been used by the Royal Navy since the 17th century and is the home of the Royal Navy Armament Depot at Instow. The depot stores ammunition and explosives for the use of the Royal Navy, and is also the home of the Royal Marines Base, Chivenor.

Instow is also the site of a number of festivals and events throughout the year, including the Village Fete, the North Devon Ploughing Match, and the Instow Regatta. The village is also home to the annual North Devon Yacht Club Regatta.

Instow is a small village with a lot to offer. Its sandy beach and estuary are perfect for a day out, while its historic buildings and pubs provide a unique atmosphere. The Royal Navy Armament Depot and the Royal Marines Training Base make it an interesting place to visit, and the festivals and events throughout the year add to the charm of the village.
