Things to see and do near Instow

If you're planning a visit to Instow, you'll find that there are plenty of things to see and do in the surrounding area. Here are just a few ideas to help you make the most of your trip.

  • Beach Strolls – Instow has a long sandy beach that is perfect for a leisurely stroll. Enjoy views of Taw and Torridge estuary, the historic Appledore, and the stunning coastal scenery.
  • Instow Regatta – A traditional regatta is held in August each year, featuring sailing, rowing, and other activities. There are also plenty of food and drink stalls, along with live music and entertainment.
  • Kayaking – Take to the water and explore the estuaries and coves of Instow. Guided tours are available, and all equipment is provided.
  • Cycling – Hire a bike and explore the surrounding area. There are plenty of cycle routes to choose from, including the Tarka Trail and the newly opened South West Coast Path.
  • Golf – Hit the fairways and enjoy a round of golf at the Instow Golf Club. The club also offers lessons for beginners.
  • Bird Watching – Instow is a great spot for bird watching, with a variety of species to be seen including wading birds, sea ducks, and gulls.
  • Fishing – Instow is a popular spot for anglers, with plenty of mackerel and bass to be caught from the shore.
  • Beachcombing – Take a walk along the beach at low tide and explore the rocks and shoreline. Keep an eye out for treasures such as shells, driftwood, and sea glass.
  • Surf School – Learn to surf with an experienced instructor at Instow Beach. Courses are available for all ages and abilities.
  • Pubs – Enjoy a traditional pub lunch or dinner, with a selection of local ales on tap.
  • Shopping – Browse the independent shops, galleries, and boutiques in Instow.
  • Boat Trips – Take a boat trip around the estuaries, and spot wildlife including seals, dolphins, and birds.
  • Gardens – Take a stroll around the beautiful gardens at Instow House.
  • National Trust Sites – Explore two National Trust sites in the area, including the Grade II listed Hartland Abbey and the spectacular Lydcott Gardens.
  • Historic Sites – Visit the ruins of the Iron Age Fort at Instow, or explore the remains of the medieval castle at Appledore.
