Hallsands is a small seaside village located in Devon, England. It is situated on the English Channel, just south of Start Point. The village was once a thriving fishing community, but the devastating impact of coastal erosion has drastically changed the landscape.

The village of Hallsands was established in the early 17th century when the first settlers arrived. The village was initially set up to provide a safe haven for fishermen and their families. At its peak, the village had two pubs, a post office, a fishmonger, a blacksmith, and several other small businesses. The village also had a pier for fishing boats and other vessels to dock and unload their catch.

By the end of the 19th century, Hallsands was a prosperous fishing village. Unfortunately, the start of the 20th century brought a series of devastating events that changed the village forever. In 1897, the government approved a dredging project to expand a nearby harbour. This caused the beaches around Hallsands to erode, leaving the village increasingly vulnerable to storms and high tides.

In 1915, the village was hit by a severe storm that caused extensive damage. Over the next few years the erosion worsened, and the village slowly disappeared under the sea. By 1917, only a few of the buildings remained. The remaining residents were forced to evacuate and the village was abandoned.

In the years that followed, the sea continued to erode the coastline, leaving Hallsands as an isolated ruin. Despite its ruinous state, the village of Hallsands still remains a popular tourist destination. Visitors come to marvel at the ruins and learn about the story of the village and its inhabitants.

Today, Hallsands is an important reminder of the devastating impact of coastal erosion. The village serves as a poignant reminder to be mindful of the environment and the importance of protecting our coastal areas.

The village of Hallsands is now a designated conservation area, and is managed by the South Hams District Council. The Council works to protect the remaining ruins, and encourages visitors to explore the area responsibly. The area is also home to a wide range of wildlife, including a number of rare species of birds and other animals.

Hallsands is a beautiful, yet tragic reminder of the power of nature and the importance of conservation. It is a place of great historical and cultural importance, and its story is one that should be remembered and told for generations to come.
